Our mission is to reward young, exceptional talent for their entrepreneurial spirit, leadership growth, and ingenuity through the funding of an annual, one time scholarship award of $10,000.
Many of the Kilner Group team members paid for much or all of their college education with the assistance of scholarship money from organizations outside of their institution. Our vision is to create an opportunity for students who are driven, hungry, and dedicated to personal growth to help fund their college education. We are passionate about lifelong education, both in the traditional classroom setting and in our careers. Being a small business owner requires self-reliance, grit, planning, and the ability to fail forward, and we are passionate about finding the next generation of young entrepreneurs.
About the contest:
The scholarship is open to current high school seniors through rising college seniors.
Eligible applicants must reside in the following areas (current college students whose permanent residence is in one of these areas are also welcome to apply):
We are offering $10,000 to the student who creates the best business plan executive summary for an original company. This contest focuses on the development of a business model that will generate revenue and profit while filling a need or gap in the community, identified by the student. This can take the form of a brick and mortar store, online business, app idea, or any number of other options. The best executive summaries should exhibit creativity, self-determination, and a purposeful, well-crafted argument as to why the company will succeed against competition. An overview of what topics should be included can be found at the U.S. Small Business Administration website. We will also be hosting a webinar, Business Planning 101, on Sept. 20th which will give potential applicants an introduction to the essential building blocks of a strong business plan. You can register for the live webinar here. If you are unable to attend, don’t worry, the webinar will be recorded and made available on this webpage shortly after the 20th.
Entries will be judged on how well the executive summary fleshes out a company description, market analysis, organization and personnel chart, service or product line, marketing and sales projections, startup funding required and how it will be obtained, and financial projections. The “wow” factor will also be considered – additional points for ingenuity, storytelling, creativity and other intangibles that influence the growth potential of the business.
Initial entries are strictly limited to 5 pages, 12pt Times New Roman or Arial single spaced font with 1” margins. Any entries longer than 5 pages will be judged solely on the first 5 pages. Please include a cover sheet (in addition to the 5 pages) with your name. Do not include your name on any of the 5 pages that will be judged. Entries will be assigned a random number and the judging panel will not see the names of applicants until after finalists have been decided.
To submit your entry, please complete the form at the bottom of this page.
The scholarship award can be paid directly to the student or to the academic institution of their choice.
Submissions from teams of students are accepted, but all team members must meet the eligibility requirements. The maximum number of individuals allowed on a team is 4.
Applications are accepted until November 17th, 2017. Finalists will be notified by December 5th, 2017 and will be invited to present their executive business plan summary to the judges panel on December 28th, 2017. The final presentation is strictly limited to 20 minutes. (location TBD). The winner will be announced no later than January 6th, 2018.
